RACUN ROKOK DI TANGAN KITA LOH
Tak tahan hendak merokok, seusai sarapan, Rangga (bukan nama tulen), 30 tahun, pindah dari ruang makan demi menjauhkan asap tembakau dari anak-anak dan istrinya. Sambil selonjoran di sofa ruang televisi, dihembuskannya asap rokok panjang-panjang hingga menyesaki ruangan. Tak lama kemudian, sambil menggendong si kecil, istrinya menghampiri dan duduk di sampingnya. Saat itu juga Rangga mematikan rokoknya.Kebiasaan itu banyak dilakukan perokok lain yang berniat menghindarkan anak dan istrinya menjadi perokok pasif. Padahal, studi awal tahun ini di Amerika Serikat mendapati racun asap rokok itu tetap mengendap di baju, rambut, dan seluruh tubuh si perokok. Meski menjauh dari anak dan perempuan (hamil), tetap saja menghadirkan risiko kesehatan. “Setelah rokok dimatikan, maka sang anak cenderung mendekat, seperti memeluk dan mencium mereka,” ujar dokter Jonathan P. Winickoff, Ketua Peneliti dan asisten profesor pediatrik Harvard Medical School, seperti dikutip BBC. 
Dia mengatakan menjauhkan rokok dari anak itu tidak efektif. Sebab, partikel racun asap rokok tetap berada dekat anak itu, sebagaimana di rambut dan baju si perokok. Apalagi jika sang ayah kerap merokok di lingkungan rumah dan di dalam mobil. Maka sedimen-sedimen racun rokok menempel di sofa, karpet, gorden, hingga jok mobil.
“Saat si anak bermain di lingkungan perokok, maka dia akan menghirup kandungan arsenik ataupun karbon monoksida,” ujar Profesor Menaldi Rasmin, Spesialis Paru-paru (Konsultan) Rumah Sakit Umum Pusat Persahabatan, seusai seminar mengenai rokok di Hotel Millenium, Jakarta, Selasa pekan lalu.
Adapun asap rokok berisi 250 gas bahan kimia dan metal beracun. Selain dua yang disebutkan Menaldi tadi, masih ada butane-racun yang ada di korek api gas, lalu polonium-210-zat karsinogen dengan radioaktif tinggi. Jenis zat ini pernah dipakai untuk membunuh bekas detektif Rusia, Alexander Litvinenko, pada 2006.
Kemudian berturut-turut, hidrogen sianida, butane, amonia, kromium, kadmium, dan masih banyak lagi. Dari penjelasan Menaldi, zat-zat beracun ini tidak diketahui mengendap berapa lama.
Nah, yang paling rentan terserang racun rokok tangan ketiga ini, menurut Menaldi, adalah anak pengidap hipereaktivitas saluran napas. “Sekitar 50 persen anak yang berbakat hipereaktivitas saluran napas berisiko tinggi terkontaminasi asap rokok,” ujarnya. Ini bisa dikatakan alergi saluran napas yang dipicu keadaan lingkungan, termasuk dari lingkungan perokok.
Gejala awal bisa ditandai oleh batuk kecil. Lalu, batuknya menjadi produktif hingga mengakibatkan saluran napasnya becek. Jika terjadi peradangan di salah satu komponen saluran napas seperti bronkus, maka bisa mengakibatkan hipereaktivitas bronkus. Berlaku sama untuk komponen lain seperti hidung, faring, laring, trakea, bronkus, bronkiolus, dan alveolus.
Saat kinerja paru-paru terganggu, maka bisa membuat si anak kekurangan oksigen, sehingga mempengaruhi daya ingat, pertumbuhan, dan intelektualnya. “Oksigen kurang, otak menjadi lambat berpikir. Susah mengingat dan cepat lupa,” kata profesor humoris itu. Namun, penyakit ini bisa berkurang atau menghilang di usia dewasa. Sebab, saluran napas pada anak masih terus berkembang. Jika terkena saat dewasa, maka lebih sulit sembuh. “Penyakit ini bisa genetik ataupun akibat lingkungan.”
Dari studi Harvard Medical School, yang melibatkan 1.500 rumah tangga–baik keluarga perokok dan yang bukan, tercatat 95 persen sepakat bahwa racun rokok di tangan kedua sangat bahaya bagi anak dan 43 persen perokok percaya hal yang sama untuk racun rokok tangan ketiga.
Lebih jauh, perokok sendiri sudah mafhum bahwa mereka berisiko tinggi mengidap infeksi pernapasan, gangguan janin (bagi perempuan), sampai kanker dan impotensi.
Menurut data badan kesehatan PBB, WHO 2004, di tahun 2002 lebih dari 750 ribu orang Indonesia meninggal akibat rokok. Mereka menghabiskan lebih dari Rp 100 triliun dalam setahun untuk membeli lintingan tembakau dan cengkeh itu. Data demografi Fakultas Ekonomi Universitas Indonesia 2008 menunjukkan, 93 persen pecandu rokok adalah orang dewasa, sedangkan di bawah 20 tahun mencapai 7 persen.
